I saved a new DXF file and this time the views were visible in DraftSight, unfortunately they were all stacked over one another. Sometimes four layers were visible including the sheet format, other times only layer 0 was visible. I gave it a few more tries with variable results. I tried to open it back again in FreeCad: empty.

I tried to open it in "USBCNC", a simple cam software pakage: nothing there. I opened a native file from FreeCa library to practise a bit and tie some things. They have done a lot of SVG improvements lately, but web developers are very inventive and find ways to do things with the file format, that even the SVG developers might not have thought of.I am a bit newbee to this huge project.

It might not even be a large part of the user base. DraftSight 2022 is a major software upgrade with proven and powerful features that includes most important capabilities and functionalities.
The web industry is not the only one that uses Illustrator. It's not suitable for print for example while Illustrator has to match the requirements of a vast amount of different industries. Inkscape on the other hand is built around the SVG file format. So what should it do when it encounters structures or attributes in a file that it cannot map to its own file structure? Different structures in development teams and then browser developers adding their part to file formats. And with a completely different body of developers and different dynamics in development. With completely different requirements of what files need to be able to do (animation, interactivity etc.). SVG has its roots in the web, with a compltely different conception of how files work, or how object styling works. SVG supports a lot of constructs that Illustrator doesn't even know of. SVG is not a native file format of Illustrator.
